These are absolutely filling and delicious!
Is this a hamburger or a super glorified grilled cheese sandwich?
I do not know but who cares!
Once again this has been adapted to my taste. Before frying the hamburger patties, chop onion and bell pepper. I found the sliced onions want to string-out of the sandwich when you take a bite. Sauté until the desired done-ness for you. Remove and set aside until you are building your sandwich. Continue as directed.
INGREDIENTS
1 pound ground beef (85% lean)
1 large egg, lightly beaten
1 medium yellow onion, half grated, the other half thinly sliced chopped
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon kosher salt
1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
12 slices white sandwich bread cut into 1″ thick slices or Texas Toast Bread
12 slices American cheese, optional
1/2 green bell pepper, chopped (not in the original recipe)
PREPARATION
In a medium bowl, combine beef, egg, grated onion, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Mix until combined. Form into thin patties.
Spread butter on one side of each slice of bread.
Heat a large heavy skillet over medium-high heat. Cook burgers about 3 minutes each side. Drain on paper towels. Drain grease from skillet.
In same skillet, place *6 slices bread, butter side down. Top each with a slice of cheese, if desired, some onion slices, and a burger. Top with remaining slices cheese, if using, and bread, butter side up. Cook each sandwich until golden brown, about 2 minutes per side.
*I don’t know about you, but I have a large cast iron skillet and can only fit two sandwiches in it at a time! So, you may need to repeat the building process.
The original recipe is from Kathie Lee Joel (wife to Billy Joel).
