…but I Only Used 1/2 of the Can!

Okay, now what?  That recipe only called for 1/2 cup of chicken broth or 1/4 cup tomato sauce.  It really just irritates me to throw food away…even a partial can.  It’s not that I’m cheap!  I’m just frugal.

Well, one day the light bulb came on.  Drag out the ice trays!   Pour your partial can of whatever ingredient you have in the ice tray(s) and freeze.  If you know the measurement, you will know how many cubes to pull out of the freezer for that next recipe.  Here are a few ideas to get you started:

  • tomato sauce
  • hot dog sauce
  • any broth, i.e. chicken, beef, veggie, etc.
  • condensed soups

You will need to measure how much each little well holds in your ice tray since they’re all different.

For Tomato Paste, you will use a special technique.  Spray a little non-stick spray on a cookie sheet.  Measure out 1 tablespoon (or whatever measurement you want) and drop by spoonfuls on the tray.  Pop that cookie sheet in the freezer.

Now they’re frozen.

You definitely want to label a zip top bag and pop the frozen cubes or tomato paste into the bag.  Next time, you save yourself the frustration of throwing away food.

Now, pat yourself on the back.  You have now been dubbed frugal.

I do this all the time. I have baggies of all sorts of things in my freezer.
