Drawn in by the Yank’s Franks blog about an entrepreneur (and future hot dogger) detailing, from start to finish, the trials and tribulations of establishing a “Hot Dog Joint” I am straying from my usual review of Street Food.
Yank’s Franks actually began as a dream of George and Janice Yankowski more than 25 years ago while living in Connecticut just outside of New York. The inspiration to serve great hot dogs arose from the many wonderful hot dog joints in the area.
Their plan took a major step forward earlier this year and, as detailed in their blog, they began searching for property, selecting a name, and sampling food to choose the perfect products to offer their customers.
Opening on August 9th (just 2 weeks ago) they have been extreemely busy and Yank’s Franks is already building a network of repeat customers. Yank’s Franks offers their hot dogs steamed or grilled (Yank’s favorite), they toast their buttered buns and they serve a chili made with Certified Angus Steak (not the typical ground beef) that makes the chili dog a huge seller. They also serve a specialty dog that is Yank’s adapted version of the Chicago Dog.
So, when in Maine, seek out Yank’s Franks on 1738 Post Road (Route 1), Wells, Maine.
As their slogan says (and it’s said – that’s true!),
Frankly, we serve the BEST dogs!
Owner: Yank & Janice
Location: 1738 Post Road (Route 1), Wells, Maine 04090
Specialty: The Wells Beach Dog. It starts with a buttered and toasted New England hot dog bun. On the bottom of the bun sits a bed of bacon. Resting on top of the bacon sits a griddled (crispy on the outside with a terrific snap, juicy on the inside) natural casing dog smothered in Raye’s Top Dog Mustard. To top this all off we dress the top of the dog with a generous portion of sauteed sauerkraut and onions.
