Here is a little bit of good news if you are health conscious and like a fruited alcohol drink.
Reuters reported in April 2007 (ok, I’m a little slow) research has proven if you have strawberries or blueberries in your mixed drink, it will actually double the antioxidants!
Alcohol Boosts Antioxidants in Fruit Drinks, Study Finds
Fruit drinks are known to contain healthy antioxidants, but now researchers have found that adding alcohol to fruit juice actually increases antioxidant levels, Reuters reported April 19.
Researchers from Thailand said that adding ethanol to blackberries and strawberries raised antioxidant levels, and suggested that the same may be true of other colored fruit or vegetables, as well.
The discovery was accidental: researcher Korakot Chanjirakul and colleagues at Kasetsart University and the U.S. Department of Agriculture were actually looking at using alcohol to keep strawberries fresh longer.
The study appears in the online edition of the Journal of the Science of Food and Agriculture.
